Three Greeley men on Weld County Sheriff’s Office’s Most Wanted list have been arrested in the past few days.

John Allen Stewart, 33, wanted on suspicion of burglary, domestic violence and failure to appear, was arrested Wednesday in Baton Rouge, La.

Margie Martinez, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said Weld authorities had a location on Stewart and passed it on to the U.S. Marshall’s Office, which made the arrest. Stewart is in custody in Louisiana pending extradition to Weld County. He has already appeared in court in Baton Rouge on the charge of being a fugitive, Martinez said.

Early Tuesday, Greeley Police arrested Faustino Garcia Jr., 24, after developing information that he was in the 2200 block of 1st Avenue. Officers cordoned off the area and arrested Garcia without incident, according to Greeley Police spokesman Joe Tymkowych. Garcia, wanted on failure-to-appear warrants on three felony counts, is in custody in Weld County Jail on $200,000 bond.

Late Thursday morning, Raymond Garcia, 26, was arrested by Greeley Police in the 3300 block of 7th Street. He was arrested without incident and taken to Weld County Jail. Tymkowych said officers found a small amount of controlled substances on Raymond Garcia, who was also charged with possession.

He is wanted on suspicion of forgery, possession of a controlled substance, escape and violation of a court order.

Tymkowych said he doesn’t know if Raymond Garcia is related to Faustino Garcia.
“Both of these guys are people they’ve been looking for for some time,” he said.

A man shot and killed by police after holding his 7-year-old son hostage in a restaurant was wanted for the 2004 murder of his girlfriend, authorities said Wednesday.

Authorities had been seeking Manuel Benitez, 38, since the slaying of Stephanie Spears more than four years ago. The couple’s son, Benjamin, had not been seen since Spears was beaten to death with a dumbbell, according to his fugitive profile on the FBI Web site.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh in Tuesday’s standoff but was expected to survive, said sheriff’s Lt. Liam Gallagher.

Defendants charged with environmental crimes or violations of the U.S. Federal Criminal Code sometimes flee the court’s jurisdiction and/or the USA rather than face prosecution or to serve a sentence. When these circumstances occur, the defendants become fugitives from justice.

The following wanted posters identify fugitives sought by the EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division. Each one provides a brief case summary and instructions on how to report information related to their identity and/or current location. You may also report the information to your local police or if you are outside the United States, to the nearest U.S. Embassy.

Sarah Jo Pender

Washington D.C. - The U.S. Marshals announced today the arrest of the most wanted woman in America, Sarah Pender. Pender, the lone female fugitive on the Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted list, was arrested Saturday, December 20, in Chicago by local authorities. An anonymous tip was received less than two hours after Pender was profiled on Fox’s America’s Most Wanted, and police were able to pinpoint her whereabouts. She was found in an apartment in the 2200 block of West Farwell Avenue and was arrested without incident.

Pender was convicted in 2002 on two counts of murder and was serving a 110-year sentence in the Rockville Correction Facility in Indiana before she escaped in August. In 2000, Pender and her boyfriend purchased a shotgun and returned to their residence where they shot their two roommates. After killing the roommates, Pender and her boyfriend disposed of the bodies in a trash dumpster.

While serving her sentence, prison authorities believe Pender befriended a correctional officer, who allegedly helped her escape. Prison security footage on the day she escaped shows Pender walking toward a prison exit at the same time the guard drove into the facility to get gasoline. Authorities believe the guard hid her in the vehicle and drove her off the prison grounds where she met up with her get-away driver.

According to Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal W. Buz Brown of the Southern District of Indiana, the citizen tip leading to Pender’s location indicated the trust between the public and the joint law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.

Pender is currently awaiting an extradition hearing and may be returned to Indiana as early as today.

John, Reve and Meghan Walsh listen as the L.A. Police Department announces that they have positively identified Ottis Toole as Adam Walsh's murderer and bring closure to a 27-year case.
LA Times Image

Twenty-seven years after the slaying of Adam Walsh, authorities officially named Ottis Toole as the killer. Hollywood Police Chief Chad Wagner said that Toole was considered the prime suspect all along. Wagner went on to admit that although Toole’s case was weak, that he could have been charged during the original investigation. The Police chief acknowledged that many mistakes were made by the department and apologized to the Walsh family. Critics of the indictment argue that lack of new evidence, and the inability of the defendant to defend himself of the allegations, leaves no definitive claim to his guilt. To this Wagner has stated, “If you’re looking for that magic wand, that one piece of evidence, it’s not there.” In response to the naming of his son’s murderer, John Walsh stated, “We can now move forward knowing positively who killed our little boy. I believe wherever Toole is, he’s paying and being held accountable for his actions.” The decision was finally reached once Toole’s niece told John Walsh that her uncle confessed on his deathbed in prison that he had murdered and decapitated Adam Walsh.
