John Hollenhorst Reporting
An FBI announcement Friday about a fugitive polygamist cult member has rekindled memories of a violent saga that captivated and frightened Utahns for many years.
The FBI in Texas added Jacqueline Tarsa LeBaron to its Most Wanted list because of four murders there in 1988. That was just a small fraction of the murders committed by that group.
When polygamy cult leader Ervil LeBaron died of a heart attack in his prison cell way back in 1981, it was assumed that would end his cult’s violent activities. A bad assumption, as it turned out.
It was an era of extraordinary violence in the polygamy movement, all of it committed by one tiny faction.
The murder of Dr. Rulon Allred shocked Utah in 1977. He was gunned down in front of his patients by two of Ervil LeBaron’s wives. The assasination revealed a complex web of polygamy cults and prophets that persists in a different form today.

The Patriot Ledger
The South Shore police team that has nabbed 30 men charged as Internet predators now is after another target: they are talking to children online to see how safely - or how dangerously - the kids are acting.
‘‘The key is, obviously, how many are willing to meet a stranger?’’ said Marshfield police detective Steven Marcolini, a member of the High Tech Evidence Analysis Team. ‘‘It’s not to build criminal cases. It’s just to change behavior.’’
What the team members have done until now is log onto Internet chat rooms and represent themselves as a child, usually a girl 13 or 14 years old. Older men start an exchange of messages, and the officers respond. The police don’t bring up sex, but some of the men do, and that has led to arrests.

Florida parishes bureau
Published: Aug 22, 2006
WALKER — Police were still searching Monday for a 41-year-old man who is accused of trying to kill a police officer in St. Tammany Parish and who they believe led them on a five-hour manhunt Sunday, authorities said.
The manhunt began around 5 p.m. when the Walker Police Department received an anonymous tip that a wanted fugitive, Roy Lee Massey Jr., address unknown, was seen at a Florida Boulevard home in Walker performing yard work, police said.
Massey is wanted for two counts of attempted first-degree murder on a police officer in St. Tammany Parish, police reported.

DENVER - Investigators want to track down a mother who they say has used her children to commit crimes.
Lorena Sagarnaga is on Colorado’s Most Wanted list.
Sagarnaga is believed to be a Mexican National living in the metro area. She is wanted for conspiracy to commit theft, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The Fugitive Location and Apprehension Group (F.L.A.G.) is hoping someone has seen her and will give them information about her.
F.L.A.G. spokesperson Sonny Jackson said, “She used her children to commit crime. She used her children to conceal stolen property at the Park Meadows mall, and that’s why we’re looking at her and she’s basically fled.”
If you have information about Sagarnaga, call CrimeStoppers at 720-913-STOP.

The chief of a small Rowan County police department, who once helped bust others for child pornography, now faces such criminal charges himself.
Landis Police Chief Charles Childers, 50, was arrested Thursday. Federal court documents accuse him of sending webcam videos of a man masturbating and a file showing a teen having sex.
An affidavit says Childers also asked an undercover agent posing as a 14-year-old girl to send panties to him at the Police Department’s mailing address.
“This is a shock,” said Landis Alderman George Pless, fighting tears between deep breaths. “I absolutely cannot believe what I’ve heard here today. I can’t understand why a fellow would do something like this.”
Childers is taking a leave of absence until town leaders meet to figure out how to handle his arrest, Pless said. He wasn’t sure whether the chief, who’s served in the top job there about eight years, was still being paid.
The department has about 18 full-time and reserve officers. They are not under investigation but are on administrative leave.

Here is a little retrospective on the Jon Benet Ramsey case and how it progressed.
.jpg)
The first images of JonBenet Ramsey that were broadcast to the world showed a pretty little girl in heavy make-up and flamboyant costumes parading across a stage. At the time, the media described her as “a painted baby, a sexualized toddler beauty queen.”
From the day in 1996 when JonBenet was found dead in the basement of her home in Boulder Colorado, the Boulder police and a large proportion of the world’s media believed that her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were responsible for her death.
Prior to the murder of their daughter, John and Patsy Ramsey’s life seemed almost ideal. Patsy, a former beauty queen, was married to a successful businessman. They had moved to Boulder in 1991 where John ran a computer company that he had started in his garage.
The Ramseys readily adapted to their new life in Colorado and made many new friends. They built a large house in an elite suburb, and entertained often. Their last party in Boulder, just three days before the murder, was particularly happy.
Over a hundred guests were present at a Christmas function. The Ramseys believed that they had good reason to celebrate. Patsy had warded off recurrance of ovarian cancer and John had been voted Boulder’s “businessman of the year.”

AMERICA’S MOST WANTED: AMERICA FIGHTS BACK has accomplished the remarkable achievement of 900 captures as a result of airing fugitive profiles. The milestone 900th capture will be revealed on the season premiere of AMERICA’S MOST WANTED airing Saturday, Sept. 9 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
In November 2004, a jury in Cambridge, MA, convicted Marlon Morris of repeatedly raping a 13-year-old girl. But Morris wasn’t in the courtroom to hear the verdict. Minutes earlier, during a lunch break, he had slipped out of the courtroom unnoticed and headed out the courthouse door to freedom.
The Massachusetts State Police named Morris to their “Most Wanted” list and turned to AMERICA’S MOST WANTED for help. After a profile of Morris aired on AMW, a tipster called police with information that the fugitive was hiding in the New Orleans area, working as a construction laborer.
This morning, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, working in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, set up surveillance on a location just outside New Orleans. They moved in as Morris walked out to a car, and took him into custody without incident.
