Published: Saturday, July 28, 2007Today, a continent-wide manhunt continues for 22-year-old Jesse Imeson, wanted for murdering three people in Ontario. While experts speculate about the fugitive’s mindset, his motives and his possible next moves, they all conclude that there are only a few possible outcomes for a suspected killer on the run — capture, surrender, suicide or escape — and in most cases, it does not end at all well.
Each case is different, but in an era where so many media options exist that the police alerts quickly become ubiquitous, where America’s Most Wanted has become a powerful television tool of capture, and where border warnings can be issued instantly and acted upon, it has never been more difficult to remain on the run and avoid capture.
In the current Ontario case, the chase for the wanted man began on July 19 after Carlos Rivera, 25, was found strangled to death in Mr. Imeson’s apartment in LaSalle, near Windsor. Four days later, on July 23, police discovered the bodies of an elderly couple, Bill and Helene Regier, in nearby Huron County. Investigators are worried about the theft of two long guns from a house near the Regiers’ farm and announced the theft of two vehicles from the area.
“Let’s assume [Mr. Imeson] strangled a guy in his room and he killed this couple. He knows if he turns himself in now, that’s it for his life. He probably doesn’t see much future in that so he’ll take his chances running until he does get cornered,” said Mr. McCrary, the former FBI agent.
He speculated that Mr. Imeson may be acting out a “James Dean scenario where he’s larger than life.”
“He’s probably very aware of what’s going on. He’s got the radio on. He knows the noose is getting smaller and smaller. It will end. Typically, it ends violently.”
